An update... Getting ready to do some track time with the car at Watkins Glen, NY in early June. I threw on some new race shoes - Goodyear Blue Streaks on Torque Thrust D's. I can slide one sheet of paper between the tire and rolled front fender. Not acceptable for what I'm going to do in June so I'll have to change the front a little. But I think I have the stance where I want it.

It has been a frustrating several months. Running open headers with down turns at the collector. Still waiting for fabricator on exhaust work. Will have race type side exhaust and for street the conventional to the rear using X-pipe crossover and Magnaflows in stainless. There arent many around this low particularly here in New England.

Wow this car is awesome! I try to go to Laguna Seca at least once a month just hoping to see a Trans-Am style car on the course (haven't made it to the Historicals yet. That's an expensive weekend!). Always been my favorite era of racing, and I'm glad to have been able to witness the buildup of this one, even if it was on a computer screen.

Thanks guys for the kind words.... it is a special car not so much at all for what it is but for the fact that I was able to hold unto it for all these years while starting a career and business, raising a family of 4 kids, the cat and the dogs. Having a supportive wife even when I was gone a minimum of 4-5 days at a clip to regional and a few national NHRA events with my top fuel buddies and then some of the SCCA events here at Lime Rock and other northeast tracks like the Glen in NY did have a toll on things but we got this far. Will keep you fellas in tune in coming weeks...

But you know I'm really quite honestly more pumped about wrenching and finishing my wife's '63 T-Bird (as a tribute to her patience with me!) and then I can get the '62 Catalina 2 dr. Post layin' low and simple.

Made the trip with my friends at Cobra Automotive, June 6-10 at Watkins Glen International. All three of my sons met me there. Did 2 days of track time (fresh motor had just 180 miles on it prior to this). Easily passed tech inspection and so in those 2 days I did about 100 miles on the track in 20 minute intervals during the mornings. Through Cobra Automotive we stayed with their entourage of 10 or so cars - all vintage racers with scheduled SVRA events Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. We hung out with some very cool Australians from Melbourne and Sydney who shared either a tent for our cars or the garage. It was a blast. The boys and I have not attended an SAAC (this was SAAC 37) event since 1993 and it was also at the Glen. This time we had THE car!

Son Chris with me visiting Cobra Automotive's Scott Hackenson and his 2 cars... a blue '66 GT350 and the infamous yellow '67 Mustang that was a Shelby Trans Am car driven by the late Jerry Titus. In '66 Shelby hired him for Trans Am duty and Jerry was the #1 driver on the team, instrumental in Ford getting the '66 & '67 Manufacturer's Championship. Titus was born outside Binghampton, NY not far from here.

Ran Torque Thrust D's with 6.00 x 15 Goodyear Blue Streaks that day. Car stuck well.

    fraser.jpg

Scotty's car driven by Fraser Ross from Melbourne. We had a great time with Fraser and his dad Ian in the garage area and this is a very strong Cobra Automotive prepped car with wonderful Shelby racing history. Shelby signed the dash and there's a tribute to Jerry Titus for having taken this car to fame. Fraser Ross races a Porsche GT3 in the Australian Cup Challenge and he is only 21 years old. We'll all hear more about him in the future. I am certain of this and the boys and I had a super time with he and his dad.

    `John Cropper.jpg

Here is John Cropper from PA who was our next door neighbor in the North Paddock. He and his son Chad are the friendliest bunch and race 2 identical GT 350's in SVRA.

    Marty Beaulieu.jpg

Marty Beaulieu in his '67 Cougar. So cool to see a Cat like this on the track and Cobra Automotive does a fantastic job supporting Marty - a very fast and competitive car, we'll see more of this year in SVRA.

Son Justin taking the car for the parade laps with Cobra Automotive crewmember Tom as passenger. It's the 45th Anniversary for the '67's and the 50th for the Cobras of which there were many fine examples.

    100_8192.jpg

Here's Curt Vogt owner of Cobra Automotive with Chuck Cantwell sitting in my car next to sons Chris and Mike. Curt took 1st place in class with his '66 R Model Shelby on Sunday. He builds cars like no other and supports teams in SVRA throughout the globe. I'm lucky to have his shop less than 25 miles from my house and to have him for a friend. He makes serious horsepower out of a small block Ford.

Chuck Cantwell had his '66 GT 350 at the SAAC show which he and Cobra Automotive restored two years ago. Carroll Shelby hired Chuck to oversee the production of his '65 -'67 Shelby's at LAX back in the day. He is an accomplished racer and engineer. I was just so honored to have him spend time with all of us. With Shelby production going to Livonia, MI and the A.O. Smith organization in '68 - Roger Penske hired Chuck to manage his entire racing operation.

    100_8193.jpg

Mark loading the car back in the trailer. Curt knew we had just completed fabbing the side exhaust in 304 stainless a day or so before we had to head out. I only had less than 180 miles on the motor and didn't have time to do a full shakedown. So he offered to give me a ride. So we just put it on the track for a hundred or so miles with me behind the wheel hitting consistent 120 - 127mph in the back straight shifting a modest 5,500 - 5,700 rpm; 50 - 80mph in the tighter turns with the CalTracs set loose. It ran strong and it hooked extremely well. I couldn't be happier how well it all turned out.

And.... She was the lowest '67 there. That's what it is and that's the way it should be.

Completely bad-ass. Maybe in the future, some skinny whites on reverse Cragars(or the stocks) for the off season?? I have been sitting on my '65 Impala for almost 15 years now, it's coming home from my uncle's as soon as I buy a house. Thanks for the extra motivation.
